King Sterndale
The village is the Derbyshire seat of the Pickford family, founders of the moving company Pickfords. More recently the Miller Family has occupied the Hall. They have carried on the good work of the Pickfords and have restored the surrounding area into the beautiful English parkland that can be seen on the journey into the hamlet.
The village has a buttercross, which was originally reported to commemorate the coronation of Elizabeth I. Unusually the village can only be approached from one direction via a road that is twenty metres wide. This land was created as a result of an Enclosure in 1773. The route of the road changed slightly as a result of the church's construction in 1847.
